“the end goal of fiction is (of course) to collectively identify and consume only the good things. good stories make you a good person and bad stories make you a bad person” you guys literally sound like the 2nd grade teacher who told my mom not to let me read the golden compass

not to swing the bat 360°, but i’ve seen a lot of weird, condescending nonsense on the other side of this as well

look, the end goal of strong literacy skills isn’t to have perfect taste and be right all the time. i frequently enjoy things that have objective flaws. i frequently fail to enjoy things that most people would consider flawless. sometimes, i fall for propaganda. sometimes, something makes me uncomfortable, or confused, and i have to pause to figure out why. that’s life!

the more comfortable you are navigating the relationship between what a story wants to say, what it is saying, and how that affects you, the easier your life will be. you are free to criticize the things you love and celebrate the existence of the things you hate.

i say this with all the compassion of a person who went through years of therapy for OCD—your gut reactions do not define you, and you don’t have to worry about The Bad Media turning you evil

i truly believe that christ jesus taught us to be nonviolent. that being said, i go crazy when (often privileged) people bring up christ’s pacifist message to condemn those who are fighting for liberation by whatever means they feel is necessary. i go especially nutzo when those same people don’t feel inclined to criticize the violence that is perpetuated by the systems that are being resisted.

Sorry, but I’d rather accidentally love too many people than too few. I’d rather accidentally welcome people I’m not supposed to than exclude people I’m supposed to welcome. I think God looks much more kindly on one of those than the other.

Saint John Chrysostom said, “It is better to error by excess of mercy than by excess of severity…”

One of the most profound messages I think you can learn as a people pleaser in recovery is that even if you police yourself every single moment as to not offend anyone and to be generally likable, some people will hate you and want you to be unhappy anyways simply because they can inflict harm and want to so you really might as well voice your opinions and live life loud and proud so you can attract people who will love you and understand you too

Dear tumblr staff,

stop. its ok. you don’t need to do these things. just focus on functionality(like the video player). we don’t need these little updates when somethings(like the video player) need your focus. thank you for your time but really, tumblr looks great. try to fix more important things(like the video player) so that we can all properly enjoy the features of tumblr(like the video player)

This post is a decade old this year.

New weird horse just dropped, folks.

A spotless giraffe was recently born at Bright’s Zoo in Limestone, TN and was just announced in the media this morning. They’re starting a public naming contest for her, of course.

A baby giraffe stands in a pen. she is a consistent soft brown with a lighter belly and has no spots.ALT

I’d love to know what type of mutation causes this lack of of pattern, but I don’t know if we have genetics on that for giraffes the way we do other species. As far as is known, she’s the first spotless giraffe ever documented!
